Emergent Literacy Instruction

There are a range of different skills that each emergent reader and writer needs to build to help them move forward to reading and writing with comprehension.

For students with complex communication needs, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is, of course, a crucial part of their life – and essential for their literacy program.  As I explain in the presentation “Literacy and Complex Communication Needs: Developing Language”,  we need to ensure that every student has access to a comprehensive vocabulary to help their language develop – and literacy and language need to develop hand-in-hand.

Each of the six interventions shown above play an important part in their literacy development and should occur in their daily literacy program. Some of these areas, such as shared reading, should be happening more than once each day and many of them can be embedded through the other activities we do throughout the day and can be done in any setting!

The emergent literacy menu (see menu bar above) will take you to more information about each of these areas – or you can click on the links below:

This emergent literacy planning is in English – but a couple of generous people have translated the Hello book to Dutch and Spanish.  You can access these from the blog post “Hello Book – in Dutch and Spanish“.
